You may want to look into USB_ModeSwitch http://www.draisberghof.de/usb_modeswitch/. I had a Verizon USB760, which I believe is similar, and USB_ModeSwitch did the job along with KPPP.

One note with KPPP is that you want to set the conection speed lower than the default (the default connection speed s 460800 and you probably want to drop that to 230400 [one step down] if you keep dropping connections at the higher rate).

USB_ModeSwitch is included with and works just fine in Slackware (but look at the website for hints and techniques).

Hope this helps some.

Slackware 13.37 supports your device via usb_modeswitch. The file is /etc/usb_modeswitch.d/106c:3b05. So when you plug your device, it should be recognised and switched to modem mode.
Your problem is likely to be in the connection parameters. Are you using the correct APN for your ISP?
Also, if you are trying to use pppd directly, you may need to copy /etc/ppp/resolv.conf to /etc/resolv.conf when the connection is made, so that the DNS server information is available. kppp does this automatically for you.
For information on using pppd directly, see here. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...4/#post4213848
One advantage of doing this is the output from the pppd connection is logged to /var/log/syslog so you can diagnose problems.

Don't know if this will help or not (I'm digging in memory of getting a Verizon USB760 working) but I seem to recall that I had to initialize the thing on a Windows box -- it wants to install a bunch of (Windows) drivers, software, who-knows-what then it will let you hook up.

What I do seem to remember is that your account ID is the phone number of the device, xxx-xxx-xxxx, and you need to dial #777 to get connected.

You can set those things in KPPP and turn on a display that shows the progress during connection; trust me on this, it's a heckuva lot easier to use KPPP that fiddle around trying to configure ppp.

Hope this helps some.

For some strange reason, I find that Crunchbang works flawlessly with the Verizon UMW190 USB aircard. Ubuntu, however, mounts the device as a disk drive, Debian Live and Backtrack 4&5, even though Debian-based, doesn't work.

Can anyone shed light on why this might be?

Thanks

These modems "look like" a USB flash drive (remember, they're primarily made for the Great Unwashed on Windows) and, when you plug 'em in they'll automount like any USB stick. USB_ModeSwitch (mentioned above) does the switch-over (so you see the modem and not the drive); worth a look-see if you're having problems.

Hope this helps some.
