Question How to archieve a directory

Let's say that i have a directory named Linux ;it has 3 MB and i want to archive it (obtain one or more 1.4 MB archives so i can copy them on floppy disk);

how to do that ? (a! and i want to see these files under windows then!)

if i type

zip Linux.zip Linux

i obtain a zip archive with one folder (Linux) and which contains no file ! (0 files stored !)

Ah, I apologize!

It is...

zip -r files.zip files/

I forgot to add the -r. By the way, why don't you create a FAT32 partition to move files from Linux and Windows? It eleminates the need for a floppy.

As root:

mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy

Then cp files.zip /mnt/floppy

Although I'm not sure how 3 MB of data is going to fit onto a floppy. Maybe split it up? Someone else might know of a better way.

You can use 7zip to untar (gz/bz2/rar) in windows.

Dude - after you zip the file, just do a regular ls -l command. It will show you the file size. -- J.W.

The most important command you'll ever learn is 'man'. It gives you information about how to use almost every other command.

Try typing in 'man zip' and reading what it says about zipsplit.

Enjoy!
