How much swap will be fit?

My RAM is 512 M SDRAM, should I setup a 512 M swap or 1G swap?
Thank you!

Rule of thumb is, ram + swap = 1 gig.

I wouldn't use any more than a gig.

If I have a 1G RAM, should I setup any swap partition?

Yes, it's always recommended to have at least a very small swap file or partition. There was a very good explanation sometime ago ins this forum about this necesity.

i have 500 RAM and set up a 1Gig swap - i won't again.
there is a way you can set up your system, or it may be the default,
to only dip into swap when RAM is maxed out.
i hardly ever even access my swap partition.

with a half - gig RAM, i would go with the half-gig swap. Any more would likely just waste space.

this rule was right in the times when the computers had 4 MB RAM.
My RAM is 256 ans I used to make 512 swap, but I never found the swap used, so 128 swap is good, because some distros can't be installed with less.
