Hello everyone, just migrated from winXP 2 days ago.
After a full install I upgraded the kernel to 2.6.14.3 and I'm happily running KDE now. I haven't encountered any real problems sofar except with my sound quality.
Browsing the web for information has not helped me in this case, probably because I'm too green to understand the suggested solutions to problems I believe are similar to mine.
I first ran alfaconf which seemed to work. It recognized my sound card and suggested the intel8x0 driver. Problem is when I fire up xmms or any other player the sound is awful. English isn't my mother tongue but maybe distorted and scratchy are decent words to describe the quality of the sound. I tried changing the sound server configurations in kde and preferences in xmms to no avail. Playing around with alsamixer does not improve the situation.
lspci gives:
Code:
00:06.0 Multimedia audio controller: nVidia Corporation nForce3 250Gb AC'97 Audio Controller (rev a1)
lsmod gives:
Code:
Module Size Used by
nvidia 4081936 12
snd_intel8x0 29536 0
snd_ac97_codec 92092 1 snd_intel8x0
snd_ac97_bus 1856 1 snd_ac97_codec
r8169 23304 0
While booting a message of "sound card not found" or similar was printed.
Support for ALSA was compiled into the kernel, not as modules.
I'd really appreciate it if someone has any ideas or could guide me in the right direction. Thanks!
