Thanks to all the inputs, I got the idea to copy all .txz files from the latest a, ap, d, .. y files into a single directory. Then I ran installpkg ./*.txz. This cured the problem. I can once again update and upgrade to the 64 current version. I'm still not sure how I trashed the slackpkg system in the first place. Anyway, I'm very happy.

Just know that this won't cover any non-official packages installed, like from SBo. If you didn't clear your /tmp, you could install the packages that are there (that is the default location for packages to be stored when built using the SBo templates).
