help getting started in slackware

I am new to linux, tired of microsoft and all. so this will be my first distro.I have no idea on where to begin, I have checked out the slackware book I have noticed it is verry vague on pre system setup and how to download slackware and burn it to disk. I am the kind of person who needs to have things explained well in order to understand. I have DSL internet so I don't know how long it will take to download. there is no LUGS around my area so any help or guidence will be helpful

Download the iso here. You only need cd 1 and 2.
ftp://slackware.mirrors.tds.net/pub/...kware-10.2-iso

Here is a very good install how too with pics.

If you read the how to it will get you up and running with a gui. If you are into books, Running Linux is a good over all one. There is also a book called Linux for a Windows Administrator (I think that is the name).

Also, google is your best friend. If you can not find it on google or find an answer you understand, post here. The people that browse the Slackware part are great.

Just a couple of first steps, HouseC. The new Slackware 11.0 should be released in a week or two, so wait before you download or order it on CD.

It would be a good idea to try a live CD first to see if Slackware is compatible with your hardware. (I've had trouble with many distributions not working with my DSL unit, but Slackware-based distributions do.) I would recommend you download and try SLAX before installing Slackware. It is live, i.e. it runs from CD without touching your hard drive.

Also, when you download CDs, you can use an application you probably already have on your Windows machine called Neo. The file you're downloading will end in .iso and you can burn it to CD in Windows using Neo.

Here is SLAX. You would probably want the Standard or Kill Bill versions, near the top.

Hope this gets you started!

I suggest you also pay attention to shilo's sticky. Really helpful for starters:
