help about procedure to get my laptop to work...

well im a newbie and someone told me that slackware was the best distro for learning linux so here i am. ok i installed slackware 10.2 on my acer travelmate 4654LMi laptop... configured xorg very well but the problem comes with the kernel. Slackware comes with kernel 2.4.31, it doesnt support my intel pro wireless card 2200bg nor my sound card (realtek ac'97)... well i compiled kernel 2.6.15.1 but i still dont have sound or wireless or even recognizes the cd-rom...

I have to make some adjustments after i compiled the kernel or it should work fine just after compiling it???

I need to set up my wireless connection in order to connect to the internet because i use my university's wireless connection...

thanx

Well you have to select the drivers in the kernel for your hardware, it doesn't work automatically...

For sound, make sure you select the correct driver as a module instead of built in, then run alscaconf. As for the 2200bg, I didn't compile it into the kernel but downloaded the ieee80021 http://ieee80211.sourceforge.net/, ipw2200 driver and firmware from http://ipw2200.sourceforge.net
You will need the firmware regardless, unzip the firmware package in /lib/firmware.
