Try turning the line in and CD in volumes down. The noise is electrical noise which I would imagine is coming from the other components in your system. Pretty much every PCI sound card I have come accross has had this problem.
Basically, mute all inputs that you're not using.
Dave
P.S. Try running SETI@Home with the volume turned up a bit. Very weird.
I noticed that same problem, but in a different operationg system THAT SHALL GO NAMELESS (ya know windows).
I assumed that it had to do with my speakears being on either side of my monitor. Also the main woofer/volume controll thingy. I did move them and it helped a great deal (being away from the monitor and all).
In linux though...hmmm. For some reason it never did that in linux, dont know why. Maybe it does something strange and handles some currents differently. I may be way off with that idea, but who knows.
I would just reccomend spreading out your components a bit and see what happens. I have a small desk myself so it was kinda tricky to do that setup, but it helped and i even noticed that music sounded better when I moved the speakers out a couple feet. Simple and maybe even silly, but i guess im easily amused.
no thats just it, its comming from headphones! good headphones too. These aren't cheap ones, they were 20-30 dollars by Koss they go over the entire ear, basically you can hear whats comming out of the headphones and thats it, even when there is no music, you don't hear outside noises.
SUSE Live Eval didn't do that, but it may be as was stated the CD volume I did have that up.
Mike
EDIT: side note windows doesnt do it either! Now I am just plain scared...

I know that some mobos have issues with this.... there is a set of instructions that cleared it up for me in the FAQ over at www.mini-itx.com. Ill copy/paste it here. Let me know if it helps with your system

3.2. What should I do if I have poor quality sound (pops, clicks and squeaks) - particularly when dragging or scrolling windows?
This is caused by X writing blindly to the video card's instruction queue without checking to see if the queue is full. This will lock the PCI bus for about 40 - 50 audio cycles, causing pops, clicks and squeaks. The via82cxxx_audio driver is still somewhat fragile, so it is possible that some applications will fault ungracefully if the bus is disrupted badly enough (e.g. with SDL applications).
You can make X play nicely with the PCI bus by adding
Option "PciRetry" "true"
to the "Device" stanza. Nasty pops and glitches will go away, and system stability will be much improved.

Talking Computer
Look for this:
1- Problem:
Are you not running SETI@Home ?
Explanation:
Maybe you are getting the "First Contact"
Solution:
Call the press and become rich
2- Problem:
Don't you believe in God?
Explanation:
You are receiving a New Revelation
Solution:
Open a Church and become rich
3- Problem:
Are you sure your pills are in order?
Explanation:
You are mixing your medication and alcohol
Solution:
Visit you doctor
If you checked that list, and you are not in any of those cases:
A- You are programming a lot, like more than 25hs per day, 8days per week
or
B- Your equipment is getting RADIO interferences.
Some time ago I really could listent to music in my speakrs... and also at my new phone! They were not cheap, but in the end I had to change it. The phone I am using now is one of the cheapest, but it works, whithout strange sounds.
Actually my computer also talks with me, but this time I know that it is just God telling me to visit a doctor in order to be OK to met the First Contact, next Friday.
