HDMI connections to TV, puzzles

HDMI puzzles.

If I am on Linux in X windows and get on youtube
then get some song going, if I connect to my TV
with the HDMI connection, I get no video or sound.
However if I get out of X windows then the video
comes on the TV screen as I go out to the standard
command line from X. When I reboot with the
TV on, the computer display is on the TV. When
I go into X windows, then I get the video on the
TV, but no sound.

So why do I get no output to the TV if I connect
an established X windows application to the TV?

When I boot up linux with the connection to the
TV, I get the TV display, but no sound. Why
no sound?

When I run windows 7, I get both video and
sound on the TV with the HDMI connection. Also
if on Windows and then make a connection to
the tv with HDMI, I get the video and audio
without having to boot up with it connected.

Anyone know what is going on? Why no audio
in Linux with HDMI to the TV, and why I have
to boot up with it connected to the TV to get
the video connection?

Because of the HDMI handshaking process.

As for audio, we just had a long thread about it:

If it's a discrete NVidia card and you don't want to use Pulseaudio, then the ~/.asoundrc here will probably work for you. Create it, turn off the TV and the computer, turn the TV back on, and turn the computer back on.
