Hard drive problem?

Hi,

I have installed Slackware on my Toshiba laptop. I have compiled my own kernel 2.6.10 and all seems fine. The only problem is every so often i get two loud clicking noises from the hard drive. I have used windows and ubuntu and i don't have this problem. Have i missed any settings in the kernel? I am not sure if it could happen, but i don't want it to break my drive? Any suggestions?

Well, you can check what make your hard drive is, go to their website, and see if they have a hardrive checking utility, just to be 100% sure that your hard drive is still working properly.. That could be a start.

keep an eye out for any crashes or segmentation faults, file corruption, etc.. for the next few days too.

well, she did say that the problem isn't happening with windoze and ubuntu... so you could pretty much rule-out a hardware failure in that case...

kimberley, i got clicking noises from the (samsung 40gb) hard drive on my slackware box once also... i didn't have any other distro installed, and i was suspecting a hardware problem and was ready to buy a new drive... but then i booted the slackware rescue cd or something and did some tests and everything seemed fine... anyways, the thing is i didn't have time to figure-it-out so i backed-up all my crap and zeroed the drive, repartitioned, and re-installed (yeah, windows style.. LOL)... well, that was about six months ago i think, and the clicking noise hasn't come back ever again... i'm sure i had to screw something up as root for that clicking to appear...

just my two cents...
