Apropos - in the holidays I again had a visit by a math student studying for a "master".
On former visits, when at UNI using typical Windows applications as IBM PSPP, he could say e.g. "R" is a sort of overkill, where nowadays there is enthusiastic talk about Python, C++, vectors, matrices, AI, machine learning, R and abstract curves and sorts of differential equations I don't understand anything of.
I was told examples of student projects could be to run and re-run 2D simulations written in Python and C++ of a self navigating car en route to several destinations based on a locally written algorithms / C++ libraries, or attempting to predict the surface of a whole planetary landscape based on imagery only of a few square feet.
These are young people in their prime, and what is of interest is that Linux, thanks to maintainers and developers, provide these applications, for free
