Grub bootloader problem

Hello.

My setup used to be this:

10GB windows partition
10GB Suse partition
10GB Slackware partition
1GB Swap

I was trying out Slackware and Suse to see which I liked better. You'll be glad to hear that I decided on Slackware. So I thought I would erase the Suse partition and give more space to Slackware.

I put the Slack installation disk one into my computer then used cfdisk to erase my suse and slackware partitions, then create one bigger one. Now my setup is this:

10GB windows
1GB swap
~70GB slack (I had some unusable space with my last setup)

Then I just re-installed slackware.

But now I have a problem, because when I boot up my computer, I get a command-line version of GRUB, on which I can't seem to do anything. Now this seems very strange to me since I thought I would be getting rid of GRUB when I erased suse, but it still seems to be there.

I'm using boot-floppy to get into slackware now, but I'd rather just use LILO.

So how do I actually get rid of GRUB, even though it should already be gone?

Put the second slack cd in and boot from it. Then make a directory for example
mkdir /mnt/slack

then changing reiserfs for what ever your slack partition is using as a file system and the hdax for your slack partition.
Quote:
mount -t reiserfs /dev/hdax /mnt/slack
then
Quote:
chroot /mnt/slack
then
make sure you like your /etc/lilo.conf (like it has windows and slackware configured)
type
Quote:
lilo
Sorry I did this in a real hurry if you have any questions ask away!

Also if you find this all toooo confusing you could just re-install slackware and use the installer to configure and install lilo for you (in the MBR)

Good luck!

"So how do I actually get rid of GRUB, even though it should already be gone?"

Your bootloader sits on the Master Boot Record which is the first block on the hard drive. The MBR is not part of any partition so your partition rearrangement did not affect the MBR.

"I'm using boot-floppy to get into slackware now, but I'd rather just use LILO."

To use lilo boot into Slackware, edit /etc/lilo.conf, and then issue the lilo command:
lilo
The lilo command will install lilo on your MBR.
