GoogleEarth Crashes in Slackware 13.1 (32-bit) with ATI Radeon X300 Series

(I've been looking through all the previous posts regarding this problem; nothing seems to help.)

I have installed GoogleEarth-5.2.1.1588-i486-1_SBo, I've gotten libGL.so.1 and placed it in /opt/GoogleEarth. GoogleEarth more or less starts up then crashes with the following
Code:
fubar-root-/root: googleearth

(process:17310): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: gtype.c:2458: initialization assertion failed, use IA__g_type_init() prior to this function

(process:17310): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_once_init_leave: assertion `initialization_value != 0' failed

(process:17310): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_new: assertion `G_TYPE_IS_OBJECT (object_type)' failed
Google Earth has caught signal 11.

We apologize for the inconvenience, but Google Earth has crashed.
 This is a bug in the program, and should never happen under normal
 circumstances. A bug report and debugging data have been written
 to this text file:

    /root/.googleearth/crashlogs/crashlog-4c9a2c27.txt

Please include this file if you submit a bug report to Google.
And the crash report
Code:
fubar-root-/root: cat /root/.googleearth/crashlogs/crashlog-4c9a2c27.txt

I'm kind of thinking that this all may have something to do with graphics drivers (I dunno, just seems possible). I have an ATI Radeon X300 card (yeah, older than dirt). I have tried installing the proprietary drivers from AMD:
Code:
fubar-root-/usr/local/packages: ati-driver-installer-9-3-x86.x86_64.run
(not showing the unpacking)
==================================================
 ATI Technologies Linux Driver Installer/Packager
==================================================
which: no XFree86 in (.:/root/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/games:/opt/GMT/bin:/opt/netCDF/bin:/usr/lib/java/bin:/usr/lib/java/jre/bin:/usr/lib/java/bin:/usr/lib/kde4/libexec:/usr/lib/qt/bin:/usr/share/texmf/bin)

Error: ./default_policy.sh does not support version
default:v2:i686:lib::none:2.6.33.4-smp; make sure that the version is being
correctly set by --iscurrentdistro

Removing temporary directory: fglrx-install.GKKgK7
I do not have /etc/X11/xorg.conf, I just let the new "self-discovery" stuff work (and it seems to for everything else).

Hopeless?

You can not use fglrx with that GPU on Slackare 13.*. The crash you experience with GE is a known problem that currently happens with all open source drivers with GE, though whether it's a bug with the drivers or with GE is (from what I've read) still unknown.
