google-chrome and java

I am running latest-version of google-chrome on a 14.1 (64-bit) with the latest version of Java and chrome refuses to run java. as a test I just go to oracle's test java (http://java.com/en/download/installed.jsp?detect=jre) and get the beloved 'Java is required to display...' Install Plug-In message. I know Java is working I just tested it from Firefox (24.6.0) and if I open a command line and type java -v i get

well that was quick. i guess for now I will have to keep using FF whenever I need java.
