Cool GNOME's gDesklets or Google Desktop !

For eons now Gnome's infamously tricky to install gDesklets has been one of those hit & miss features that I've been like since forever trying to install. But what should I find being offered by Google today but a hauntingly familiar looking gDesklet looking desktop. Supposedly installable off the web!

Check it out!

Any comments, greatly appreciated.

Yea... Me too.

That has nothing to do with gdesklets/widgets/applets type of stuff. Google desktop just indexes your entire hard drive for easy searching ala google style searches.

I never understood why people install that to be honest. I cringe everytime I hear about someone installing it. Sounds like one of the biggest security risks of all time.

I was under the impression that it's backend was exposed to the internet directly thru google but I'm not sure. That could just be paranoia and the fact that it has "Google" in the program name. Either way, I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole.

Gdesklets is very easy to install. They just released 0.36 not too long ago. If you want an example .SlackBuild type of script, I have one here:

Thanks

Thanks for the latest link on gDesklets however I think a gDesklet installation will require more than what it is in that directory. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong. However I'm pretty sure you have to take the time to try and install 1/2 the known universe in order to get gDesklets running and thats "if" your lucky.

Is there a HOW-TO on gDesklets that you can point me to. If it's a good resource that has a working installation in the end, I'll gladly give it a try.

Thanks again,

- Perry

You need pygtk 2.0 or higher (available from slackbuilds.org), libgtop2, gconf and gnome-python in addition to standard Slackware stuff (python, librsvg) according to this link: http://books.google.ca/books?id=YyWW...l=en#PPA152,M1 (although it may be a little old), and supported by this site: http://www.bestshareware.net/gdesklets.htm The actual gdesklets site had very little information.

So it looks like the only requirements you need are standard Gnome stuff I think (I assume that gconf and gnome-python come standard with Dropline and any other Gnome build for Slackware, but I'm not positive as I don't use Gnome). As for libgtop2, it probably comes with Gnome too (hence the 'g') but I have no idea. Either way, there isn't THAT much to install.
