Getting new monitor. Automatic xorg configuration

My monitor died today so I will need to buy a new one. :-(

When I connect up the new monitor can I assume that xorg will detect it automatically and use the correct refresh rates etc? Or should I be deleting xorg.conf?

Well, the xorg used by slackware 13 will auto-detect stuff without xorg.conf, so you don't need one. Personally I would only use an xorg.conf if there was a problem with auto-detection.

I cannot remember but think that I do have a xorg.conf for my wacom tablet. Of course I cannot check it up now!

I would just move the xorg.conf file to xorg.conf.old then startx and see if all goes well. If it doesn't you can move the file back and try again. if that doesn't work then generate a new xorg.conf using

Xorg -configure

or

xorgsetup

I am in run mode 4 so I will have to boot using the installation dvd first time and do some editing.

So using the installation dvd to boot from I moved xorg.conf and the monitor worked fine when I re-booted.

I did then have to run nvidia-xconfig to get the nvidia driver working (and this writes a xorg.conf).

The monitor is widescreen and the background on the login screen (using mode 4) did not extend the width of the screen so I had used the login manager to deselect the default kde4 login theme and use a 1920 pixel wide jpg for the background.
