Getting Lightworks to work on Slackware 14.1 64bit

Lightworks is the only video editing program that I've found (so far) that has the professional codecs, in which I will need to use if I'm going to break away from Adobe Premiere Pro (and Windows) completely. I'm aware that Slackware is not among the supported platforms by Lightworks but I did not want to switch to another distro. My first attempt at installing Lightworks (via src2pkg and deb2tgz) on Slackware unsurprisingly failed and that was about a couple months ago.

With the latest update release of Lightworks 12.5 and a personal recent discovery of the Lightworks 12.0.3.I's Slackbuild package at slackbuilds.org, I set out to try getting Lightworks working on my Slackware 14.1 64bit system again and I was successful this time. I figured someone else might appreciate the information. I am not an expert or anything, so please let me know if the fix suggestion below is not the correct way of handling things.

Note: throughout this post, I am using the free version of Lightworks.

First, the Lightworks 12.0.3.I Slackbuild package has an error in its executable script.

Open '/usr/bin/lightworks' with your favorite text editor as a root.
Go down to the very bottom of the text and look for this line:

Code:
/usr/lib/lightworks/spawn
Change that to this:

Code:
/usr/lib64/lightworks/spawn
Now it'll find the missing spawn executable.

Hopefully that's all you have to do but on my system, spawn complained that it was couldn't find "libCg.so". A quick search online revealed that it was a part of Nvidia's Cg toolkit and luckily, I found a 'nvidia-cg-toolkit' package at Slackbuilds.org. I downloaded/installed it. Lightworks 12.0.3.I booted right up on my system. There are button icons missing but everything worked and I was able to put together and exported a 30-sec sample video.

With this new dependency information, I uninstalled 12.0.3.I and I tried re-installing Lightworks 12.5 via the src2pkg and deb2tgz methods. That also worked. Lightworks booted right up but like the 12.0.3.I version, some of the button icons are missing. I don't know how to go about finding out why the icons are missing and quite frankly, it isn't a big priority for me, as long everything is working. Installing Lightworks via the deb2tgz method will complains that it wasn't made with makepkg but I haven't gotten to get around figuring that one out yet.

I should probably mentioned that on my system, I am using the Nouveau graphic drivers instead of the Nvidia graphic drivers. Maybe that's why I had to install the 'nvidia-cg-toolkit' dependency.

Slackbuild maintainers, I recommended adding the 'lightworks' word as a keyword to its Slackbuild package so that this program will show up in the search engine at both the official website and the sbopkg program.

I hope this post helps someone in installing Lightworks on Slackware 14.1 64bit.

It is probably better to email the maintainer directly. Not all slackbuild maintainers frequent the forum. Per the lwks SlackBuild page, the email listed for klaatu is

ACK

Thanks for the feedback, SW64. I'll check this soon. It's running fine for me on my system but maybe I did that stupid thing where I change something on my system and then forget to push it to the place I publish to. I hate it when I do that!

I also have a fix for those broken icons. I'll have to look it up.

Slackbuild updated for 12.5, including a change in the 'lib' suffix.

Might take a day or two for it to surface in the official SBo repository, but I do have the Pro version running quite nicely on my machine at home.

[CLOSED: FIXED]

Slackbuilds.org finally pushed through the updated 12.5 version of Lightworks Slackbuild package this morning. I used sbopkg to compile the package with and its installation went well. But it still wouldn't start without the nvidia-cg-toolkit Slackbuild package on my system. Once that was re-installed, Lightworks fired right up and the missing icons have been restored. I was able to output a short sample with no issues. Thank you, notKlaatu!
