So, I'm currenly downloading slack 9.1, and I've stopped expecting anything from it (I don't think you should) since I used slack 8.0, whose CD I found somewhere.
Like was said in the 'is Slack really that bad' thread, the install is a piece of pie.
But I've got a few questions that arose to me that I'd like to ask you:
1. I've selected usb.s to be my kernel, since I've got a CD-RW drive, of which I thought it'd need scsi (and I'd like to get my USB devices working, too). Wrong, because it works fine with scsi emulation, right?
2. My regular CD-ROM drive now doesn't work, mount always says Input/Output error. Is this because of point 1?
3. Please correct this approach:
I like the fact that there are only two modules loaded after a full boot. But I'd like to configure my sis900 card, which seems to need a module. (I'm aware of the fact that you can compile it into the kernel)
It seems that I need to pass some args to it, because simply modprobe sis900 doesn't do it. I think I have to specify something like an IRQ address. To know where I can find my card, I wanted to start by saying lspci.
But it seems, PCI - in whole - isn't configured on my system. How to start?
Thank you!
I've got Slack 9.1 to work now, it autoedetects all usb, ethernet and sound just fine.
The only problem is my 'net access: I can't get dhcp to work.
My sis900 ethernetcard works fine, and I'm sure I could get it to work on a static network, but I want it to autodetect my Cable box (router/modem/whatever) downstairs.
I remember its IP was something like 10.10.x.x, and Mandrake always configured DHCP in two seconds.
Is there any way to probe for my box downstairs, because I don't know its network address. Are their any files I should modify, like /etc/dhcpcd.conf?
What program is mainly used in Slack to connect via DHCP? Is it dhcpcd?
Nope. Sorry, I forgot to mention, dhcpcd eth0 doesn't seem to work. It just sits quiet for a while and then gives error code 1 (which it doesn't tell me in any way, I had to find out manually)
