Has anybody managed to build a 'parallel' installation of gcc 4.6.2 in a similar vein to alienBob's gcc 3.4 build? I have attempted several times by modifying the slackware -current gcc slackbuild and failed pretty miserably .
The reason I am after this is a compiling demand for the latest mkvtoolnix which asks for compiler 4.6 or greater...
If we answer the question you're actually asking, it's a yes/no answer. And my answer would be 'no' because I don't use Slackware. However, I have installed gcc-4.6.2 on my CLFS machines in parallel with the existing gcc. If you're problems are in the actual build of gcc (i.e., it errors during configure or make), I might be able to help you track down the problem so you can properly edit the SlackBuild. Just a thought in case that's what you're really interested in having answered.
Thanks for looking at this, looks like gcc 4.6.2 compiles well enough on its own, my challenge is to modify the slackbuild script. It is starting to look too much like hard work simply for one application.....
Never!!!! Maybe if I get bored, I'll look at modifying the slackbuild script. In any event, just wanted you to know 4.6.2 does build and install and work on Slackware.
Actually it looks like I have been doubly stupid, probably not or the first time . It really does not make that much sense to do a parallel installation of a newer version of gcc, this would be better for an older version or a new unstable version. Plus when I did a simple version bump on PV's slackbuild and remembered to build as full root ( su - ) i all built fine and is happily compiling updated boost and mkvtoolnix away as I type.
Edit: Dammit, boost was a bit of a pain too but all is done now:
Code:
andrew@skamandros~$ mkvmerge --version
mkvmerge v5.1.0 ('And so it goes') built on Dec 12 2011 18:29:01
