The OpenCL headers are just vendor neutral development interfaces. They don't provide an actual OpenCL implementation. Slackware (-current) only ships with one implementation, the OpenCL driver for mesa.
You most likely need a specific driver for your GPU, like https://github.com/RadeonOpenCompute/ROCm

thanks for the lead.. head banging is not my good suit.
let me see what I can do with that.. try and stick that into a slackbuild before just installing it to see if it will work.
