Fat partition inaccessible as single user

I have a fat 32 partition mounted under /mnt/vfat, and when I log in as single user I can't enter it. So as root I did a chmod 777 /mnt/vfat. After doing so, I looked at the properties of the file and they were unchanged.
still drwx-r-- .... what could I do about this ? I've tried chmod a+rwx and still nothing.

Try adding:

umask=000

to the 4th field in the relevant entry in /etc/fstab

You have to edit your fstab. Add users to the mount options and it will work. Something like this:

/dev/hda1 /mnt/vfat vfat auto,users,umask=0,rw 0 0

If you have several users on your box and don't want everyone to access the fat partition use:

dev/hda1 /mnt/vfat vfat auto,gid=windows,umask=0,rw 0 0

Create a group called windows and add the user(s) you want to be able to access the partition.

auto,umask=000 worked, thanks for that !
But powadha, how can I write all those options and still be able to keep the 0 0 -s on the correct column ? or is the column not important when fstab is executed ?

The column is not important, each line is read individually, no matter how long it is.
