I just started to think about migrating to CRUX - imagine boat full of old Slackware users - rescue boat from damaged flagship - trying to reach safe coast of CRUX island. With sad smug expression - to say farewell - it was good to sail all these years together seas and oceans of computer world - but no more. My legs are trembling, body is falling - farewell, farewell my friend. I will remember you all the time - but look - there - new mysterious island - CRUX world. Shelter for Slackware castaways.

I like how you get to the CRUX of the matter. You'll be missed. Bye, goodbye!

I had a look at CRUX, seems interesting, but there's a whole bunch of stuff on SBo that isn't in CRUX ports. What do CRUXers do in those situations?

Yeah OK, that would be a big drawback for me then, as I run quite a lot of stuff from SBo that CRUX ports doesn't seem to have.

This song has been ringing in my ears since I read the title.

Quote:
There's a sad sort of clanging from the clock in the hall
And the bells in the steeple too
And up in the nursery an absurd little bird
Is popping out to say "cuckoo"

Cuckoo, cuckoo

Regretfully they tell us Cuckoo, cuckoo
But firmly they compel us Cuckoo, cuckoo
To say goodbye

Cuckoo!

To you

So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, good night
I hate to go and leave this pretty sight

So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, adieu
Adieu, adieu, to yieu and yieu and yieu

So long, farewell, au revoir, auf wiedersehen
I'd like to stay and taste my first champagne

So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, goodbye
I leave and heave a sigh and say goodbye
Goodbye!
I'm glad to go, I cannot tell a lie
I flit, I float, I fleetly flee, I fly
The sun has gone to bed and so must I

So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, goodbye
Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye

Goodbye!

The official Crux ports are deliberately spartan. They don't aim to provide a large amount of software, just the basics. But there are a lot of privately maintained ports accessible from the crux website. Did you look at those?

for me using someone else's ports (outside core, xorg, opt and contrib) resulted in a big mess. Overlaps, versions differences, broken links, unmaintained ports and ports tested on an older CRUX release. I ended up creating and maintaining my own collection. Later, I realised that I may, as well, join SBo and I did.

However, considering that I am running my own Xfce desktop on -current (recompiled 4.12, because I cannot stand GTK3), doing the same on CRUX seems like a viable option.

Yeah, that's where I searched, no dice. I already maintain a bunch of SlackBuilds for stuff, would be too much to create them for the missing stuff, so CRUX seems not viable for me.

IMHO GTK2 is not much better, I had weird menu items with both, I opened a bug with them. They told me I'm not supposed to use GTK applications without Gnome bloat and tagged my bug WONTFIX. I'm not a programmer, but finally I managed to patch together a patch. Maybe Slackware already has similar patch?

You don't have to do it by hand, I let my computer to do the compiling.

well, my reasons are like this. For nearly 15 years I have had my desktop look and behave in a certain way. With certain variations of course, but that's how I am used to work and get my work done. GTK3 aggressively tries to change all this: no support for GTK2 themes (ok, fine... old toolkit), no support even for its modern themes (incompatibility between GTK3 releases), forces its own window decorations built in the widget itself, scrollbars that auto hide and are without arrow buttons... Who thought that an inactive window should dim all text in it? I can go on...

I found ways to address most of these things and "fix" them. I still do not like it.

Since we are discussing CRUX, something that I really liked about it was prt-get. Such an elegant tool. If I knew C++, I would try to make it work with SlackBuilds.org... Maybe it's not too late to learn?
