easy init??

I seem to have a problem with Slackware 9.1 and KDE where the systemV init files or the init files cannot be made through the use of the init file maker which comes with kde. I want to know how to make these files myself, where they are etc and how they are used and when.

Please could someone point me to a good resourse for learning this?

Many Thanks..

btw this will complete my struggle of compilation of my kernel as I dont seem to have any problem getting to this stage. Only when I start the system it says no init or similar error.

Slackware does not use system V init, it uses a BSD sytle init. Take a look at the files in /etc/rc.d/

Could you give the exact error message?

These may help:

http://www.slackfiles.net/documentat...cles/init.html

http://linuxtipps.sourceforge.net/sh.../en/faq/56.htm

as datadriven suggests, you may as well get your head around the rc.d style init way of doing things if you use slack, it is actually much simpler once you get used to it.
Coming from Mandrake etc, it seems slightly archaic, but now I wouldn't be without it.

Kde supplies the sysV editor as standard, but it doesn't really have a useful role in Slackware. Saying that, you should read the note in /etc/rc.d/rc.sysvinit

However I am not convinced that your error is related to any of this, could you clarify what is wrong?

Sounds like your compile didn't do so well after all. i'd suggest you try doing a generic compile. take the config file from whatever kernel you used to boot and compile with that. You#ll just get a standard kernel, but it will help take some of the mystey out of compiling. this way you know that any errors are in the way you compile or install the kernel and modules. the once you see how a successful compile goes, you'll be better set to try using your own config.
KDE doesn't make any 'init' files so has nothing to do with this.

Did you install module-init-tools, which is necessary for the 2.6 kernel. The way the kernel loads modules was changed between 2.4 & 2.6.

At the bottom of his post it says kernel 2.4.24 so he can use either module-init-tools or modutils which does NOT work with kernel 2.6.x
