I would suggest going back to the install. It sounds there were a lot of packages that were not installed.
Also, dhcp is a service thats provides an IP address when requested from a machine. The progam dhcpcd is a program to request the IP. These are in the "n" disk set of the Slack install CD. If you have a dhcp service available on your network, then dhcpcd is the program you desire to request an IP.
I did have a problem with the older DHCP in Slackware 8.0, I guess Adelphia updated it's DCHP something or other and my DCHP couldn't grab an IP anymore. I gave them a call and asked if they did something to prevent linux computers from doing that and the answer was no, so that was out of the question and it was my DCHP daemon that needed updating. If you get that installed and have errors you may need to update it, though it should be up to date already if you're using 8.1.
