Hi. as i've stated in a thread below i would like to recompile and optimize some slack packages for my p4 cpu. after i optimize them, the ones i use and need not all, how can i add them to the slack iso and still keep it bootable. what files should i edit and remove the packages i don't need from the slack installer and modify the packages name ofcourse instead of i486 to pentium4 ? can this be done ? thanks
oh and btw, i would like to strip it down so i can get kde on the first cd too, add a new optimized and compiled 2.6 kernel to suit my needs.
also check out the documentation on the CD itself (under isolinux or something with iso in the name, I don't remember). It tells you how to create a bootable CD, just download the Slackware directory from a mirror and replace any packages with the ones you want. Then use 'mkisofs' while excluding any directories you don't want to add to the CD.
I'm greatly interested in this manner myself. About optimizing, recompiling for pentium4 and repacking my slackware packages (only the ones I need) and then make a custom slack CD with them. My question is: do I need to do this in a special order on my host system where I optimize and repack them ? For example, optimize, recompile and repack gcc,glibc, etc (maybe follow the order from LFS??? building), then remove the i486 packages and install the pentium4 optimized base programs and start optimizing the others with those ? or I can optimize all packages using Pat's slack.Build's using the normal optimized slack system, make the custom cd, install it and final. Hope I made myself clear, if not please ask and I'll try beeing more specific.
For the record, I already optimized gcc with [-O3 -march=pentium 4 -mcpu=pentium4 -mtune=pentium4 (I actually used all 3 options just to make sure and it looks like it didn't create any problems for me at compiling, so I think it just choosed whatever was needed and worked) and I've also modified the ARCH=${ARCH:-i486} to ARCH=${ARCH:-pentium4} so I got /usr/lib/gcc/pentium4-slackware-linux/ instead of /usr/lib/gcc/i486-slackware-linux/ ]. Then I removed the gcc package already installed on my system (the one optimized for i486 by Pat) and installed my own. And with this gcc I optimized, recompiled and repacked glibc which I haven't had the chance to test it... btw, I've optimized it with the same options as gcc and will try to use them on all packages, but if I get errors I'll might just lower it a bit untill it works ( I mean the -O3 option the most, is which causes frequent problems from what I've read).
