Converting to XFCE?

I heard Slackware 13.37 came with XFCE and KDE, but uses KDE as the default. I've used KDE as the default on Debian, so I'm wondering how I switch to XFCE on Slackware.

If you run xwmconfig as root, it will set the default window manager system-wide. As a regular user, it sets the wm for that user only.

if you boot into run level 4 there is no need to switch anything. just select the window manager of choice.

I have just put windows and slackware 13.37 full install as a dual boot from same hard drive onto a desktop pc for my wife. i want to make the log in for her to slackware as simple as possible. From the splash she just selects Slackware( will make slackware default on splash later)she can manage that OK

I have edited /etc/inittab to level 4 for a graphical login

A choice of sessions came up(forgot to untick save session) got rid of this by deleting
all entries in /home/her_username/.cache/sessions

So now I have a graphical login, no sessions to choose, but still have to choose from the drop down to choose window manager. tried running xwmconfig both as normal user and root, selecting xfce but it doesn't seem to remember selection. tried editing /etc/X11/xinit and deleting out everything but xfce entries but that didn't work.

What can I edit so that she just has to put name and password into the graphical log in and nothing else?

It should remember the last DE/manager selected so she doesn't have to pick one every time she signs on. If she used KDE the last time and no one else has used a different DE/manager since she last signed on, then it should "default" to KDE when she enters her user name and password. If the last DE/manager she used was Xfce, then it should "default" to Xfce... and so on, and so on.

FYI it's not good practice to append a thread with a new question. Better to start a new thread. But anyway...

xinit and graphical login are completely separate, so editing those files or running 'xwmconfig' will only effect what happens in runlevel 3 if you run 'startx' from the console.

In kdm/xdm graphical login, it defaults to the last saved session, so select xfce from the menu the first time and it should "just work" from then on.

Hi

Thanks for replies.. well i have slackware13.37 only on my own PC ,so playing with that in order not to mess up and get hen pecked!

My /etc/inittab is also at run level 4

At the graphical login I have an icon going to a sub menu :switch user
shutdown

to the left of that is an icon giving the desktop choice : default
fluxbox
...etc
KDE
XFce4(previous)

I noted that none of the radio buttons next to the choices are selected ,they are all blank.

So if I just type in my user and pass, it just goes back to the graphical login. i have to make a choice each time by left clicking one of the radio buttons next to the Desktop I want i.e xfce everytime.

So its not remembering that I used xfce the last time. Maybe the answer might be to just get my spouse to do whats needed ,but i wouldn't mind getting rid of the sub menu & go straight to XFCE myself

Sounds like you have somehow mis-configured something, as it should work, out of the box, as Mr. Brewster and I described.

Edit in: OK, I changed my inittab file to run level 4 and rebooted. It brought up the kdm sign on screen. Very nice looking, btw. There was a box in the center of the screen with spaces for user name and password.
In the lower left corner of the box was a down arrow. By clicking on that it presented a list of 12 choices.
The first one is labeled, "Default." Once you have picked a DE/manager, the next time you look at that list "Default" will have "(previous) beside it so it reads, "Default (previous)" without the quote marks.

After she picks, or you set it up for her, Xfce, then going forward she should only have to enter her user name and password, and hit the enter key, and Xfce should start automatically (without having to look at the list, let alone make a selection).

yes

I agree and understand the above. I played around with system settings on my own machine yesterday , in session manager- Configure the session manager and logout settings I now have

onlogin restore previous session. Not sure if this made the difference but yes, on my machine although I noted all the radio buttons are still blank, on the drop down putting only my user name & pass is all thats required at the login ,to get the xfce desktop up. I will now compare my settings against my wifes settingsto look for differences.
