How do they do it?!
The responsiveness of Slackware's sshd is noticeably speedier than other distros somehow... It asks for a password immediately, other distros I've used seemed to have a bit of lag before spewing out a login prompt.

Probably due to a lack of PAM in Slackware.

ahem... I would say that a bit differently...
"Probably due to the advanced non-PAM feature of Slackware, not implemented in many other distros".

The LQWiki Slackware FAQ is one new-user resource that I recommend at least skimming.
I'm glad you're trying Slackware, and I hope you have a good time with it.

Its been wonderful. I installed it on my laptop tonight with great results. Video, wifi, and everything else works fine out-of-box. Someone has already written a slackbuild script for any software that I use that isn't included in the full-install. I like it. Great stuff!

Thereafter, look at slackbuilds.org, which does have a 'sort-of' primitive dependency check - but luckily not forced down your throat.

SBo expects you using a Slackware full install, too, there are no dependency checks. Some SlackBuilds require building other SlackBuilds before them, so that is handled by the queue functionality, but the resulting packages don't have dependency information either.

Also look at alienbob's site for other useful packages - especially tough builds like vlc and calibre, where his huge-all-in-one-build method just 'plain-works' !

And that's the right way to build and install third party applications for Slackware.
