Alright, looks like adding those lines to rc.local works pretty well. I only had to add iwlist scan and sleep 5 after it, in order to make it work fully. Thanks so much for your help. Now I only need to figure out this cursed resolution problem. A few months ago I tried Slackware on my laptop (dual boot with Windows) and never got it working right, but now since I have Windows on a desktop PC (for games), I am making my laptop pure Linux, so am going to really dedicate myself to figuring this out if I have to post on every forum on the Internet

You might want to post your xorg.conf file and maybe someone can spot the problem. What video driver are you using -- vesa, nv, nvidia?

I'm using the most recent "nvidia" driver from their site. Here are the relevent parts of the xorg.conf file:

Code:
Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "My Monitor"
    HorizSync 28.0 - 96.0
    VertRefresh 50 - 86.0
    Modeline "1280x800@70" 101.92 1280 1312 1696 1728 800 816 825 841
End Section

Section "Device"
    Identifier "VESA Framebuffer"
    Driver "nvidia"
End Section

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen 1"
    Device "VESA Framebuffer"
    Monitor "My Monitor"
    DefaultDepth 24

   Subsection "Display"
       Depth 24
       Modes "1280x800"
   End Subsection
EndSection
Actually, that last part, I currently have at 1024x768, because when I have it at 1280x800, and try to start Gnome, my screen goes black and I see my hard drive light going, and I can never get the display working again without a hard boot (pushing the button).

Another question: I can't copy and paste in Gnome! I thought I had selected while installing Linux to install a copy and paste utility that would load. Maybe that was just for KDE, which I didn't install. Oh well.
