cdrom reads data, but fails on audio

On two similar Slackware 11 systems, I'm having a strange problem with cds and dvds.

I can read data CDs and DVDs, but when I try to read an audio cd, there is an input/output error.

If I put a data cd in, and try:

dd if=/dev/cdrom of=/dev/null count=5

I read 5 blocks. Trying the same thing with an audio CD, there is an input/output error. The system reads dvds and writes dvds, and appears to write cds.

The devices are different manufacturers, but behave the same.

Any idea what isn't right on these systems?

Remember that audio CDs do NOT have a filesystem. So, there is no reading blocks or mounting or anything like that. Just ripping and listening.

Understood that audio CDs are merely tracks of data (wav files) which are digitized audio. Nevertheless, they are readable as a data stream, as with dd. In this case, on both systems, the audio CDs are not readable! I've never seen this before.

Again, data can be read from a file system CD (not mounted, just reading the CD with dd or wc. But, if the CD is an audio CD, then no data can be read.

Anyone else have any ideas?
