cdda2wav: broken audio

cdda2wav is part of the cdrtools suite and is primarily used to rip tracks from audio CD's and write them to audio files. This still seems to work.

A second use for the program is to echo data directly to a sound card instead of writing it to a file, and this is where I'm experiencing a problem.

For years I've used a command like cdda2wav -N -e -t1 -D/dev/sr0 to play CD's through my PC, but sometime last summer it quit working. It plays correctly for about ten seconds, after which the sound becomes jumpy, almost like some sort of buffer issue. I've only now found time to dig into this.

I'm running Slackware64-14.2 with a huge kernel. The problem seems related to the 2019-06-18 kernel upgrade from linux-4.4.172 to linux-4.4.182.

Using config-huge-4.4.172 I've built and tested a number of kernels and narrowed the problem down to 4.4.178 and later. Kernels 4.4.177 and earlier work fine.

Has anyone else run into this, or is it something unique to my setup?

Tim
