cant get a non root console

When I start the x server from my normal user account, I cant get a non root console. If I click on console from within the x server while logged on under my normal user name, it asks for my password and takes me to a root prompt. It wont let me permanently configure the options either. I like green text on a black background but once i close console and reopen it, it looks the same as it did before even though the settings are what i changed them to the last time I ran console

I am running slackware 12.

Can anyone help me please?
