Whoops! I didn't realize that Slackware used this configuration. I am used to 3-multiuser, 4-unused and 5-X11. This issue is now sorted out after I reconfigured init to start up to runlevel 4 in inittab.

@jamesf
My system was configured to start up to runlevel 3/5 in inittab after which I used to start X manually. Now that it has been corrected, init 3 works.

Thanks for all the help!

That said, the issue with "xdm stop" remains.
Code:
root@arikere:/home/arikere>xdm stop
xdm error (pid 2516): extra arguments on command line: "stop"
Any ideas?

That's because xdm does not accept "stop" as a parameter.

You are confusing the xdm login manager with another distro's xdm service start/stop script.
