Cannot scan root

Hi,
Ok here's what I did. I had Windows 98, XP, and slackware all on my machine. I deleted the win98 partition and the xp one, and reinstalled xp on one partition, taking up the space of the former win98 and xp partitions. I used knoppix to fix lilo, I had to change "root=/dev/hda4" to "root=/dev/hda3" because the partitions had changed. Now I don't get a kernel panic but it stops and says something like "scanning of root failed. Type root password to service or control d to continue normally. When I type the root password it takes me to a terminal but the domain name isn't there and I can't execute anything. Control d restarts the computer. I guess this is because it still thinks it's on /dev/hda4. Is there any way to save my install?

I guess you'll have to boot Knoppix once more and edit /etc/fstab so that the root partition points to /dev/hda3 ...

Before changing the fstab, tho, do a
Code:
fdisk -l
That will tell you partition types, then change /dev/hdaX to whatever your "/" partition is.
(One extra step, but has saved me from chasing my tail on what partition is what)

Ah ha! I never even thought about fstab. I'm obviously still relatively new to slackware and linux in general. Thanks guys.
