Don't Worry about it I got it fixed......all I had to do was add a "Modes" line under the "Depth" line in my XF86Config file. That also set my default resolution for my login screen so now it's what I want it to be instead 1280x1024.

I was getting the same message a while ago when my openGL was not being initialized properly. Can you run glxinfo or glxgears from an xterminal?

Also I was not entirely sure from your post....in your xconfig file, are the lines load glx and load dri commented out or are they visible to the system?

hi, both glxinfo and gears give the lines:

Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified

Error: couldn't open display (null)

which im pretty sure must be something to do with the problem. i have never tried running 3D games successfully in linux so dont really know how it works. both load "glx" and load "dri" dont have hashes before them so i assume by /etc/X11/XF86Config file is not to blame.

one thing i did notice was that povray was not installed and it is required by kdegraphics3-3D, but when i uninstalled kdegraphics3-3D, then installed povray in its default location (/usr/local/), the kdegraphics3-3D still does not see it when i install it:

rpm -ivh kdegraphics3-3D-3.2.3-3.i586.rpm

error: Failed dependencies:
povray is needed by kdegraphics3-3D-3.2.3-3

could this be something to do with it? the povray command does work also as i copied it into /bin. thanks for the help!

ok now i am thoroughly confused - i went to the ati site and was told to look at glx and dri sites. glx doesnt seem to hav radeon 7000 support, but dri does. problem is i dont really know what dri or anything is - is it installed instead of my default linux drivers or as well as? is it a replacement for openGL or how does that work? and how do i install the source code in such a way that it will work instead of my default drivers?

sorry i appear so green i am not a complete noob i just havnt had to deal with linux drivers and 3D games for linux in the past - thanks!

check if the module "radeon" is loaded... as root

root# lsmod
Module Size Used by
....
radeon {number} {something something}
....

if not, before start a X session (in text mode) try to load it manually...

root# modprobe radeon

then startx, and run glxinfo and check for

root# startx

wait ... and open a terminal and run ..

root# glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
display: :0 screen: 0
direct rendering: Yes <--- this

if it is "Yes" ... then try to run ET it should work...

Btw: Which kernel are you using?

i hav actually been trying to update my kernel to 2.6.7 from the original 2.4 that came with my SuSe 9 distro, with very limited success. the reason was i tried to install the dri drivers and they wanted a paticular kernel config file, so i thought i would take the opportunity to compile and install a new kernel.

Unfortunately after running all the of the stages in the kernel README pretty closely, including running /sbin/lilo - my system now wont boot and im forced to use the Slax live cd. all it does it ask me to select linux or Failsafe and then leaves me with a black screen. im not really sure what went wrong. i certainly didnt move or copy any files for it aside from the kernel image (altho i dont really know what that is), and the source and everything is currently located in a subdirectory of /usr/src. where does it install itself and where could it have gone wrong?

any info that mite help me to boot my system up again would be appreciated!!

o btw i worked out why glx wasnt working - i was logged into the konsole as root. as soon as i logged in as mine both worked and i was able to run ET with the software rendering (Mesa) INCREDIBLY slowly. which is why i was trying to install dri.
