Cannot access the internet anymore


I ran netconfig and put static like I usually do...

IP address 192.168.1.101
SUbnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
DNS servers 206.13.128.12

I typed modprobe b44 then /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 start but still can't access the internet?

I have a linksys router. To access the web control I have to type 192.168.1.1 in a browser..

I tried a different route through netconfig and went DHCP but it said "It appears you don't have TCP/IP installed" Huh? I dont remember removing it.. I have it on my system: tcp-0.17-i486-31b

My card is a Broadcom Corporation BCM4401 100Base-T (rev 01)

So modprobe b44 should be working? It has in the past:

when you say the 'internet', can you still browse to your router?

as this would suggest that the network card is working.......

I guess my first question is "what has been changed since it worked?" Have you installed anything? Have you uninstalled anything? Have you unplugged a wire? Have you plugged a new one in? etc.

The second question I'd ask is "what's the output of 'modprobe b44'?" Knowing that output could help a lot in troubleshooting the problem.

Finally, when you've set it up manually, are you able to access the router? Can you ping it, or bring it up by its IP address in the web browser? If you can get to the router, but not the web, then the problem is your internet connection, not your computer.

Also, it's entirely possible that you don't have DHCP installed, which could cause that error message.

Let's look at your setup...

Have you tried ping?
I would first try pinging my router...
# ping 192.168.1.1
if that works, you can try pinging yourself at
# ping 192.168.1.101
If they both work, you most likely have a route problem and can skip the ifconfig section below and go to the route section.

Try checking this to make sure you have things set up correctly.

First check the output of the following command:
# ifconfig

it should look similar to this:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:11:2F:C8:9A:6F
inet addr:192.168.1.101 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST NOTRAILERS RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1

Then check out the output of your route...

# route

It should look similar to this:

Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
192.168.1.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 eth0
loopback * 255.0.0.0 U 0 0 0 lo
default intranet 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 eth0


If you are missing the last line, you may need to issure the command:
/sbin/route add default gw metric 1

man route for more information on the route command
