Can I disable rc.udev with 2.4 kernel

I am running 10.1 with the 2.4.31 kernel and noticed that rc.udev is running in the background and is executable. Can I safely disable the udev service? As I understand udev is not used by the 2.4 kernel but it needed for the 2.6 kernel series. Normally, I would just try it but I can envision pooching the whole system without the devices loading at boot.

Thanks. It went without problems

Ran "chmod 644 /etc/rc.d/rc.udev" as root and rebooted. The usual pause I had
at boot with hardware detection "activating /etc/rc.d/rc/hotplug start" is gone. Looked at my two other Slackware 10.1 systems and it was also enabled so I guess it is a default selection on install for those who have jumped to the 2.6 kernel.
