Can't set up External Broadband modem on Ethernet with netconfig on Slackware 10

I have a Netopia Cayman 3341 external broadband modem connected to a Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet card in my computer. I used netconfig to specify a hostname and a domain name (I just made one up as I didn't know what to put there) and set it to use a DCHP server which I believe you're supposed to do for a broadband connection, but I still can't access the internet from any of the browsers in X. I downloaded the linux drivers for my broadband modem but they're in .rpm format and I don't know how to install them. Please help as I'm not really sure what I'm doing here. Thanks in advance for any help.

Is your network card being detected? If it is, there shouldn't be any problems since you only need to get your network card recognized.

I don't mean to sound stupid but how do I know if my network card is being detected?

Try running: ifconfig
You should see a eth0 or eth1 interface.
And also try: dmesg | grep -i eth
That one shows if it's detected on boot.

Success!!! After realising I had 2 network cards (I'd forgotten about the other one. It was onboard rather than a PCI card) I ran ifconfig eth0 and ifconfig eth1 and saw that thay were both up and running. I had a better card installed on eth1 so I used it when I ran adsl-setup to configure access to my ISP. I was prompted for my DSL username, password, which connection I wanted to use (eth0 or eth1) and my primary and secondary DNS IPs (which I already got from the settings web page for my modem in Windows) and I made a basic firewall selection. Then I ran adsl-start and it connected. This is my first post from Linux. I'm just so happy that I could erase the windows partition on my computer. Hurrah! And thanks for the tips.
