Slackware doesn't setup your X system for you. You have to run /usr/X11R6/xf86config as root and answer the questions about mouse, keyboard, video card, and monitor, then it writes a file called XF86Config in your /etc/X11 directory with all your settings in it, then startx should work. Then if you want it to boot X instead of text mode you have change the the default in /etc/inittab from 3 to 4 then when next you boot it will startx.
