.build files

Was looking around the source directory at ftp.slackware.com and noticed a lot of foo.build and foo.SlackBuild files. Has anyone seen any documentation on these, I couldn't find anything good in the book or google. From just looking at them it looks as if they're used to compile source, some make a package others don't. Any more info would be appreciated.
