BU-353 GPS Receiver

I want to use the BU-353 GPS Receiver with Kismet in a Slackware 13 64bit install. I'm holding off on buying it because, even though they have linux drivers, the only distro listed in the linux drivers section is Redhat.
Will the Redhat drivers work with Slack?

Drivers are here:

That isn't really a RedHat driver, it is just a modified (presumably) version of the PL2303 Linux driver that you need to build against your kernel.

Doesn't look like they put any comments in this driver to explain what they changed, but this driver is written to compile against the now-ancient Linux 2.4 kernel, so it won't work on a modern machine. It could be that the new PL2303 drivers take into account whatever changes this manufacturer made to the 2.4 driver, but it's hard to know for sure without the hardware itself.

well that leaves me with 2 questions:

1. does linux have a default driver that will work with most receivers?

2. is there a decent gps receiver that is known to work with linux kernel 2.6.X and is <= $60

[edit]
on prolific's page for the pl2303 driver it has this:
Quote:
PL-2303 (Chip H/HX/X) Linux driver for RedHat 7.3/8.0/9.0 Only.
NOTE: No need to install drivers for following:
Linux Kernel 2.4.10 and above already includes built-in drivers for PL-2303H.
Linux Kernel 2.4.31 and above already includes built-in drivers for PL-2303H, PL-2303XA/HXA and PL-2303HXD.
NOTE: Google Android OS is also based on Linux kernel so it also supports PL2303.
i hope that means it will work

To be absolutely sure of compatibility, your best shots would be either serial or Bluetooth. If you need to go with USB, you will need to find one that is listed as Linux compatible, or at the very least, try to find somebody online who has tried it already.

Hi Deyna,

I'm using a Garmin eTrex Ledgend HCx for Geocaching.

I've installed QLandkarteGT together with the Garmindev package (both on Gentoo), The GPS receiver is supported very well. Additional drivers are not necessary.
For Slackware I was trying to write a Slackbuildscript for QlandkarteGT and Garmindev since I could not find one anywhere in the net. However there are some other packages which have to be additionally installed in order to get QlandkarteGT compiled on Slackware, but for this packages there are Slackbuilds available. The packages are exif, gdal, proj and gpsd.
However, I have QlandkarteGT compiled and it runs on Slackware.
