Brother HL-1440. Have to start printer to print.

I have a Brother HL-1440 laser printer connected via USB. When the printer powers down after a certain time of inactivity, I get this error message:

"Unable to open USB device "usb://Brother/HL-1440%20series": No such device"

If I go into CUPS and start the printer, it will print until the next time it powers down. I don't want to go into CUPS every time I want to print something and start the printer. Is there a fix for this?

Okay, I print once and it prints fine. Print the second time and I get the error. There must be a way to use this printer. Yes, I did RTFM many, many times.

This is why it's hard to switch to Linux. A simple thing like printing takes 3 days to set up and still doesn't work.
