Black screen after password login screen

I hope this is the correct thread.

I've been successfully running Slackware Current with ktown and multilib for a year or more in a Virtualbox client.

Upgraded from ktown to current by making the necessary amendments to slackpkg.conf and slackpkgplus.conf

Quote:
slackpkg update
slackpkg install-new
slackpkg install multilib
slackpkg upgrade-all
slackpkg clean-system
I get the login screen where I enter the password for the selected user

I then see the KDE logo three dots and > with the progress spinner spinning

After a short time the KDE logo and the progress spinner disappear

I'm left with a blank screen with the Mouse pointer arrow which can be moved around the screen.

I can drop down to VT 1.

Any suggestions?

Alex

Check VT 7 (Alt-F7). Many systems for some reason do not make the switch automatically. I had to edit sddm.conf to "MinimumVT=1".

Thanks for the suggestion. I'd already got round to that after putting in the initial posting. It made no difference.

Thrashed around for a while. Did the usual things.
  1. Does the same happen to root - yes
  2. Create a new user does the same happen - yes
  3. As I was using VirtualBox I set up a new Vbox client using alien-current-iso - does the same happen - no. Works as expected. At this point I did notice the DVD install had VT=1 whereas I was using VT=7. Saw this by comparing the respective Xorg.0.logs. This was when I amended sddm.conf - made no difference.
  4. Then read fully the main thread "KDE Plasma 5 Hits Testing!" looking at every post that contained the word black. Not sure if I found anything explicitly, but it gave me an idea. The penny dropped. Booted up again, selected the Plasma(Failsafe) option on the login screen. It worked! Success.
  5. Rebooted and chose this time the Plasma option. Worked again!
  6. Problem solved.

Thanks
