They will probably be caused by the KDE tools you configured to manage your wireless connections. KDE's network manager is notorious for adding it's own (incompatible!) script lines to /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 without asking for permission.

Angry really i'm out of ideas...

Hi! I reinstalled Slack as it was getting really tough to narrow down my network problem, and guess what?? It is still not working! With a fresh install of Slack, I tried both Static IP and DHCP, the static IP just doesnt work, and the DHCP gives me a "timed out waiting for a valid DHCP server response..."

Really wierd... My other Slack box can connect to my router without a single glitch, but that laptop just doesn't want. Just in case it rings a bell in somebody's mind, I have a Dell XPS M1730 with a Broadcom Netextreme Gigabit card BCM5754M PCI-e Rev02... The Ethernet port looks good (no physical damage), the card is recognized by ifconfig, and lspci. Also, whenever I launch the dhcpcd command, the ethernet port lights flash and turn on, and the "connected" light on my router turn on, they all stays on for the negotiation time, but when the dhcpcd command fails, they all go back off...

Any more ideas/suggestions before I call a priest for that laptop?

Thanks!

OK, I'm a little confused. In your post 15 you posted the ouput of ifconfig. In that output eth0 has an ip address. That means either that you assigned it manually or that it was obtained automatically through dhcp. Which is the case?

Update!

INTERESTING UPDATE!!!

I tried to connect the laptop to a 2wire 2701hg-g modem/router via dhcp and BANG! Connected at the speed of light!! With my router (D-Link DIR-825), it still refuses to work! Some incompatibilities between Slack and this router?? Why my NFS worked like a charm?

OTHER INTERESTING UPDATE!!!

I just had the idea to look in the router logs to see if there is any error messages at the moment my laptop tries to obtain an IP through dhcpcd. Yes, there is! At the exact moment the dhcpcd try to obtain an IP, the router says: "Access denied to wireless system with MAC address 001D094897C8" Thats my laptop MAC address! Geez!! Thats not even a Wireless adapter???!!!! Whats wrong with the router??? This is wired! No wonders now why it doesn't work!

Hi BCarey! The output of ifconfig in the post 15 was BEFORE I reinstall Slack. Back then, I couldn't get the connection to work even assigning a static IP like you can see on this output...

I realize this thread becomes confusing, so let's take the actual config and settings (since I wiped my laptop clean of the previous slack install and reinstalled fresh).

At this moment, I have a brand new Slack 12.2 install on my machine, equipped with a broadcom BCM5754M ethernet controller. Actually, I cant even get an IP through dhcpcd and static IP doesnt work either... The strange thing is that the router has to know there is a device plugged to it because the port light turns on when the connection (physical) is established, but the laptop doesn't see anything at all...

In the configuration page (192.168.0.1) of the router, I cant see my laptop, so now I am wondering if it's the laptop (slackware config, module for my NIC or anything else on the laptop side) that is f*u... or its just the router that doesn't want to assign an IP to my laptop...

I tried to extend the DHCP server IP range on the router in case it successfully connect with a different IP (now it is from 192.168.0.100 to ...110)...

Next step, I call Dell and ask technical support for the NIC... I could also install winblows and see if it can connect to my router... any ideas???

Solved!

Following the stuff I discovered ,I fine tuned the MAC filtering, and now it works!! Strange! Maybe a bug in the router's firmware?! Who knows!!

Well Thanks to everyone who helped me! I really appreciate this!!!

Thanks Gentlemen!
