Atheros 5007eg problems and solutions

I bought a HP laptop with a Atheros wireless card, Windows Vista calls it "5007eg" while lspci prefers
08:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR242x 802.11abg Wireless PCI Express Adapter (rev 01)
I've tried the ath5k driver in 2.6.27, the stock slackware kernel but that didn't work. Madwifi did not work, subversion-checkout nor stable. Turns out that Fedora 10 detects my card and loads the right driver. How does this happen? After much googling and cmdlining(?) I came to the conclusion that fedora has patched their kernel with a newer driver. So I go to and get the latest 2.6.28 kernel, compile it with the standard config-generic-smp- config in slackware(make silentoldconfig and so on...)

I now have a working wireless network card, thank $deity!
Everything is working perfectly so far. Since it took me almost two days to get it working, I thought I'd post my solution here. Maybe someone will find this info useful.

ath5k, atheros, madwifi, wireless
