asking for partition size advice

Hello,

I'm planning to reinstall my Slackware and I would just like to ask for advice on the sizes of my partitions. I have an 80Gig HDD and I've read that its better to divide my / HDD into different partitions. What would be a recommendable partition ummmm... format/scheme(?) (sorry I'm not sure if I'm expressing myself adequately)

Right now my whole Slackware is in a single partition. But since Im reinstalling I should probably do partition it in a nicer more correct manner.

Just my two cents but I would make a 10GB / partition and leave the rest for /home.

I would suggest the same thing... I have only ever used a /swap partition /home and /

Seems to work fine.

/ 10gig
/swap (double your ram)
/home whatever is left

Just personal preference, I split out /home and /usr/local so if I have to reinstall/reformat I don't have to worry about wiping out the data on those partitions. I split /var on my servers to keep the spools from filling up the hard drive and causing other problems (less likely with an 80GB drive). I also have a separate partition for /opt since that's where KDE goes, although I admit I did it originally because I didn't make / big enough on an install one time and kept it for no particular reason.

I feel safer not having everything in one large partition, but I can't tell you if I actually am.

From experience I wouldn't ever use simplistic partitioning schemes like / + /home or / + /home + swap but maybe it works in your situation. Please search this forum, the sticky threads and the LQ Slackware Wiki pages for related questions. It's been asked before and good discussions are easy to find.
