Well the acpi kernel should give you the power off feature you want assuming that the linux kernel in slackware 10.2 has ACPI commands that work properly with your pc.

You see ACPI is still kind of 'new' in linux. So it is included as a feature of 2.4 kernels. Later as time went by they added more ACPI stuff, fixes, etc to kernels, now kernel is 2.17 series. So to be honest, 2.4 may or it may not work for you. Who know's you may have to reinstall, then wind up going to a higher series of kernels. Noone can really say which kernel will do it.

That said, If you want to install the bareacpi kernel, the I would re-install ALL of slackware 10.2 if I were you.

After you do the full noob install, where it asks for you to install the kernel, and it lists, 'floppy' or 'from cd' or 'skip use the default vmlinuz' you need to point it again to the bareacpi kernel on the slackware cd.

It will set up a brand new fresh lilo for you, as this would be a clean fresh install.

Just be sure to backup all your data, as you will be reformating, is teh best option.

Well, I will reinstall completely with the bareacpi.i kernel. But where and what shall I have to uncomment and what lines shall I have to add to my lilo.conf?
And one more question, my current kernel says it only uses about 800 Mb of my RAM, and my RAM is 1.2 Gb. what shall I do to enable an adequate utilization of my RAM ?

I delved into sime forums and my impression is that the only thing I have to do after installing with the bareacpi.i kernel, is adding the line:
append="acpi=force"
in my lilo.conf
Am I right? And where exactly should I add this line, so that when I type as root " halt" or "shutdown -h now" my PC powers off?

I would just install the bareacpi kernel only first.

Then try to do the halt and see if the computer shut's down properly or not.

If halt does not work, then you can try that append line you mentioned. Tho I must be honest with you. I have never heard of it before. Tho I am not a super/advanced user; and I do not know everything.

But a line like that would go near the top of the /etc/lilo.conf file like this:

Quote:
# LILO configuration file
# generated by 'liloconfig'
#
# Start LILO global section
boot = /dev/hda
#compact # faster, but won't work on all systems.
prompt
append="acpi=force"
#timeout = 300
Remember to have the
Quote:
boot = /dev/hda
part of the above to point to the proper hard drive that you are using. That is mine, and may NOT be correct for you.

Talking Success!!!

So, at last I solved my problem. I just reinstalled with the bareacpi.i kernel and did not add anything to lilo.conf, there was no need. Now whenever I type "shutdown -h now" ot "halt" my PC really shuts down. Thank you very much indeed!!!

I hate to be the "I told you so guy", but I told you so .... ACPI did the job. Good luck and enjoy your 'new' features

Be sure to read "Shilo's" post here in the forums (he has a web-site too) and also another person that frequent's the forums here know as Alien Bob has a nice web-site too that has some other valuable info at :

http://www.slackware.com/~alien/doku...u.php?id=start

Those two gentlemen really have you covered for the common installation issues, annoyances, etc that you will find for slackware 10.2
