Apache configure error

After doing a clean install of Slackware 9.1 with all the default options from the compiler menu left as is, Im getting errors when trying to compile apache 1.3.29 on my celeron 333 system as follows:
Code:
./configure --with-layout=Slackware
Configuring for Apache, Version 1.3.29
+ using installation path layout: Slackware (config.layout)
Creating Makefile
Creating Configuration.apaci in src
Creating Makefile in src
 + configured for Linux platform
+ setting C compiler to gcc
 + setting C pre-processor to NOT-AVAILABLE
 + using "tr [a-z] [A-Z]" to uppercase
+ checking for system header files
 + adding selected modules
 + using builtin Expat
+ checking sizeof various data types
+ doing sanity check on compiler and options
** A test compilation with your Makefile configuration
** failed. The below error output from the compilation
** test will give you an idea what is failing. Note that
** Apache requires an ANSI C Compiler, such as gcc.

======== Error Output for sanity check ========
cd ..; gcc -DLINUX=22 -DUSE_HSREGEX -DUSE_EXPAT -I./lib/expat-lite -DNO_DL_NEEDED `./apaci` -o helpers/dummy helpers/dummy.c -lm
/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i486-slackware-linux/3.2.3/../../../../i486-slackware-linux/bin/ld: cannot open crt1.o: No such file or directory
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [dummy] Error 1
============= End of Error Report =============

 Aborting!
I have added my own entry into config.layout to direct apache to install like the apache 1.3.28 package. This has no bearing on this error occuring, however.

I have no idea whats happening... can anyone shed any light on this situation??

Does slack not use RPMS? An RPM would be less trouble.

Here is some info on what that crt1.o is that seems to be missing:

http://rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2html/se...p?query=crt1.o

Just looks like your C compiler may be incomplete.

No, Slackware uses *.tgz
all you had to do was........
installpkg apache<version>.tgz

goto to a Slackware mirror and get the tarball and
install it the Slackware way!!

Thanks heaps for that link, Nic! I found that some people had problems with the 8.1 install failing to install glibc properly. Something like that must have happened to me because it worked fine after reinstalling the package!
