Anyone want to help with sendmail on Slax?
Hi guys,
I added a couple of modules to the Slax website for stuff I thought people might find interesting. I've been playing around with Slax again recently and seeing how much I can do with a running live CD. For anyone who doesn't know, Slax is a Slackware-based live CD that comes in many different flavours from bare-bones boot CD to pretty full function KDE desktop and a few in the middle. It has all of the Slackware packaging tools like installpkg and pkgtool so it's trivial to port stuff over there, most of it needs no changes at all. Sometimes it's worth it to reduce the size of packages containing non-essential stuff and also some of the paths might need to be changed from the way you do stuff on a real Slackware system because of the way the in-memory filesystem works on Slax. Also sometimes I customise things for knowing that there's already a guest user, etc. so you can preconfigure things to make life simple for the noobs.
Sendmail comes with the Slax server edition and gets started but doesn't seem to send any mail. I don't know anything about sendmail so I don't know where to start looking. I posted some questions on Slax forums but most of the users are not sysadmins as you would expect of users of a live CD distro.
Basically what I want to be able to do is to use the sendmail on Slax server to send mail that's generated by certain mail clients. It doesn't have to be able to receive anything. If anyone wants to help out on this you can post here or email me from my profile. It will be nice to add features to Slax which is already a great live CD distro.
I have tried to get sendmail to work before but i had other priorities so never got anywhere. I am willing to help, but i dont think that i can be extremely helpful. But 2 heads are better as 1 as the saying goes.

Hi Tom,
Thanks for your reply. If you've already gotten a copy of Slax server I can show you what I've got. If not and you care to have a look, then the best way to get started is to download and burn yourself a copy of Slax server here http://www.slax.org/download.php
It's approx. 200m. The torrents usually work pretty quickly as there are some very nice people with high bandwidth who usually keep it seeded.
Then you'll need to install Mixmaster client as I've configured it for Slax. You can get it from their site and install it as a module (uselivemod) or I can send you a package for installpkg, whichever you prefer. The simplest way to do all the playing round with modules and packages is if you have another machine on your lan that you can use as an NFS server. Else you'll be booting back and forth quite a bit and it's no fun.
You'll also need an editor. The simplest thing is to get vim from packages.slackware.it for the 10.2 version of Slackware and have it ready. If you don't know Vi, get Emacs. If you don't know Vi or Emacs we'll have to figure a way to test

Right, it sounds like we've a plan then
After you've downloaded the Slax server edition and booted it you can get the Mixmaster module from the Slax site under modules > other. You can install it with "uselivemod modulename" and then you'll be ready to see if you'll get the same results as I've got. It may be better to use a package because the modules get mounted in an odd way and it's difficult to get a new one without rebooting. I can email you the package I made the module from. I'll try to send you a pm on this site now and see if it works.

Hi Dive,
That sounds like something obvious to check DOH! but I never tried to get sendmail working on my Slack machines. I use webmail or a do-everything client. I'm sure Slax uses the same conf but I'll have a look now that you mention it.
I couldn't find any logs to see what the problem(s) were but my mail never went anywhere.
I will gladly help. :], but as dive said bind that comes default works pretty much right out the box. I usually change the listen address and smart host and thats usually it.

Do you need to have MX records and a static IP to send mail even if you don't want to receive any mails? And if the answer is yes, do need this even if the people you're sending mails to don't do any blacklist testing or filtering?
lordfu- remember we're talking about Slax Server here but I'll check the configs as Dive suggested
smart host is for smtp relay, right? and listen address is for receiving mails?
I'd like to be able to send mails to any of these smtps which are expecting mails but maybe smart host will be an option.
I did a cmp on the two sendmail.cf files and there are only a few differences mostly dates as Slax Server was using Slackware 10.2 and I've got 11.0 installed now. I think the configs are the same.
