Red face another newbie trying to config mysql

hello everyone I am wondering if anyone could help me with a problem im having with mysql. I did a custom install of slack in which i didn't install the perl on the cd because i installed activeperl 5.6.1 build 635 using the lin as package. I installed it the way the install file said to (only i installed to /usr/per/ instead of /usr/local/activeperl-5.6.1 i proceeded to make a symlink from /usr/bin/perl to the actual location of the perl binary I then installed apache all worked fine then i tried to install mysql. i did what the installer said on this to (extracted it to /usr/local/mysql -<buildinfo> then made a link to it from /usr/local/mysql then did the scripts/mysql_install_db i started it then did the /bin/mysqld_safe -u=mysql and it says its starting but it just sets there for like 5 min so i hit enter in the shell to make it stop then any subsequent tries i get a message that a file is missing in /usr/local/mysql/var (i probably should have said this by now but im using the 686 binary from there site) when i try to launch it by bin/mysqld -u=mysql. I set all the permissions like the help file said also. could it be a problem with activestate perl making a funk out of my install.(i had it running once before on the same install) if so is there a safe way to upgrade perl so i can use the most recent version?? i apologize for how vague my description is i don't have the error message here with me i can get it tomorrow and give it to you in a reply

Josh
