This happens to me every time I install or upgrade my Slackware. I always keep forgetting to write down what I have to do to be able to listen to mp3's (I use audacious but I believe it also makes amarok work).
Make sure mpg123 (or is it mpg321?) is installed...or just install both - won't hurt anything as both small packages, heh.
Amarok starts but can't play audio files.
I also have audacious and vlc, both play audio files.
Obviously, I have sound in my system.
I do not receive any sound message error.
WhiteWolf1776,
I have all these packages except the "compat32".
My system isn't multilib.
Maybe you could check if a working audio device is selected in the phonon configuration.
System Settings -> Multimedia ->Audio and Video Settings. Go to tab "Device Preference" and select "Audio Playback->music". On the right side, test each audio device that appears and if one is working move it on top of the list.
I am also having problems with "amarok" not playing mp3-files. After compiling and installing the package above and installing "lame" I got "XMMS" to play mp3s. Playing ogg-files in "amarok" works fine for me though but playing mp3s in "amarok" doesn't. (Slackware 14.1 - 32-Bit)
One further problem that I have is that I can't play radio-streams in XMMS. I would like to listen to this radio station: http://www.slayradio.org
Just to make sure: did you install the 32-bit edition and not the x86_64 one?
I am using the 32-bit version of 14.1. I came across the slack-build script but then eventually decided to build it from source. I used the same version numbers as the newest version wouldn't compile.
